How US & UK spy agencies are attacking privacy & the internet (NSA)

The NSA’s war on encryption, security, privacy and the internet itself

A story reported in partnership between the Guardian,  ProPublica and the New York Times based on documents obtained by the Guardian from both the NSA and GCHQ revealing the them to have inserted vulnerabilities into commercial encryption software and working with technology companies to “covertly influence” their products.

From The Guardian article:

US and British intelligence agencies have successfully cracked much of the online encryption relied upon by hundreds of millions of people to protect the privacy of their personal data, online transactions and emails, according to top-secret documents revealed by former contractor Edward Snowden.

But security experts accused them of attacking the internet itself and the privacy of all users. “Cryptography forms the basis for trust online,” said Bruce Schneier, an encryption specialist and fellow at Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society. “By deliberately undermining online security in a short-sighted effort to eavesdrop, the NSA is undermining the very fabric of the internet.” Classified briefings between the agencies celebrate their success at “defeating network security and privacy”.

Temporary Closure

Dear Customers,

After an in-depth review of the Bitcoin industry in Australia, including our own business, the market, our competitors and the legal landscape, we have decided to temporarily close our doors whilst we work on new and improved offerings. When we re-launch, we will provide our customers with greatly streamlined, faster and more convenient services. Our vision is to provide services that are better than anything anyone has been able to offer so far, making Bitcoin as easy to use any currency. Our future offerings will be different to what they are now, and our aim is to ensure that they are much better.

We believe that for Bitcoin to fulfil its potential, it needs to be a widely recognised as an established complementary form of trade to traditional currencies. This means working within and alongside existing businesses and organisations, with commercial enterprises as well as government and policy makers, to build an industry that is viable, robust and secure for the long term.

We believe in Bitcoin and the revolution it brings. We also understand that it cannot be one of opposition or only functioning outside of existing paradigms. In order for Bitcoin and Crypto-currencies to stay around for the long haul and truly be the revolution that so many hope for, we and others in the industry need to work hard to show how it will greatly benefit all commerce, for consumers, individuals as well as for existing business and governing bodies.

We’re not going anywhere. We’re here, there will be updates and you’ll still be able to contact us as usual. Our services will be back, better than ever.

Viva La Bitcoin.

Sell Bitcoin currently closed

Updated: 22 June 2013

On the 4 June 2013 we decided to close our Sell Bitcoins service while we carry out an in-depth legal and technical audit, with the hope of confidently bringing the service back online as soon as possible.

We have not been approached nor had any direct pressure to close the Sell service, but made the decision to do so in light of recent matters as covered in the media.

We expect to have an updates by the middle of June, but will provide them as we can.

We apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Update 15 June 2013:

No update yet, sorry. We do expect to be able to at least give a proper update sometime during this coming week.

Update 20 June 2013:

We have been informed that we should have an update on Friday afternoon 21 June.

Update 22 June 2013:

Sorry everyone, Friday afternoon came and went without any news.

Although we were contacted by email late last night, we still don’t have a proper update. We were told that because of the complexities and amount of work, it is taking longer than expected, so work will be continuing over the weekend.

Apparently we should have something by the end of the weekend, but I think it is better to expect more info on Monday at the earliest.

Sorry about the delays and lack of info. We don’t enjoy the wait ourselves, but we are happy to suffer through it if it means that we can make sure we get it right.

End of Financial Year Robot Sale!

Get 25% off our Buy Bitcoins commission for all of June 2013 with our End of Financial Year Robot Sale! That’s right, Robots!!!

That puts our commission (incl GST) down to 5.9%

It’s been 6 months since our last big month long Silly Season Sale (December 2012), and we thought that since the end of the financial year is fast approaching and because we like robots (and androids and daleks and mecha and other bot bots), they should be put together for a sale.

Bitcoin Bits & Stuff for 15/05/2013

Bitcoin Bits & Stuff is intended as an ongoing series of posts for us to posts news, links or anything else we want about Bitcoin, Bit Innovate, ourselves or pretty much anything we feel is relevant, even if it’s not. Stuff posts will come out any time we feel like it which could be once a day or once a month or anytime in between. They may contain a lot of links and information with our own thoughts or just a single link. We’re really not setting the bar too high, but this gives us more freedom and means they are more likely to happen. So this is the first one.

Service Stability Update

Dear Bitcoiners,

Some of you may have noticed that we have had a number of stability issues with our website of late. I wanted to take the time to explain to you all what has been going on and what have done to resolve these issues.

A few weeks ago we migrated our site over from Site5 to Pagoda Box and for the most part we were happy with the move. That is until they had a major outage and the support we received was less than desirable. This caused us to reconsider using their service and as a result we decided to temporally roll back to our original web hosting provide, while we looked for a new home.
Over the past few days we have had issues with our current host and as a result we have implemented the following:

  1. We have developed a lite version of our Buy Bitcoins service located at https://bitinnovate.net which is and will remain on a separate server from our main site. What this will mean is that if we ever have an outage again, we can quickly point users to this environment and continue running our primary offering with little interruptions.
  1. We have accelerated our plans to find a new suitable hosting provider and as of today we have migrated our site over to appfog witch sits on top of Amazon Web Services.

I would also like to take this opportunity to apologise to all of you for the interruptions in service we have had of late. As a relatively new company, we are going through some growing pains, but I can assure you that we are doing everything we can to resolve these issues and dedicated making our service as reliable and secure as possible.

Thank you for your patience and support.

Cheers,

Tristyan Lebrun
Managing Director @ Bit Innovate
